About the Organization

New Mexico Legal Aid (NMLA) provides civil legal services to low-income New Mexicans to promote family and economic stability. Our mission is to help clients access food, shelter, and security while preserving their unique cultural heritages. With locations throughout the state including Santa Fe, Las Cruces, Gallup, and Taos, we serve diverse communities across New Mexico.

About the Role

Based in our Albuquerque office, the Human Resources Specialist – Payroll, Benefits, & Leave serves as a key operational partner within the Human Resources team. Reporting to the Human Resources Manager, this role is essential to the daily functioning of our multi-office nonprofit organization.

You will act as a bridge between Human Resources, Finance, Grants, and our employees, ensuring the accurate administration of payroll, benefits, and leave programs. This position is vital for maintaining data integrity within our HRIS system and supporting the employee lifecycle from onboarding to offboarding. You will work closely with benefits vendors and organizational leadership to foster operational efficiency and provide responsive, professional support to our staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • check_circleProcess payroll accurately and timely in accordance with organizational policies and regulations
  • check_circleMaintain and update employee records, compensation data, and benefits information within the HRIS system
  • check_circleOrganize and coordinate annual open enrollment activities with external benefits administrators
  • check_circleProcess and track compensation changes, annual step increases, and related Personnel Action Forms
  • check_circleAssist with onboarding and offboarding processes including benefit transitions and final payroll coordination
  • check_circlePrepare and maintain HR and payroll-related reports for audits, grants, and compliance activities
  • check_circleParticipate in collective bargaining negotiations and assist with gathering related data and documentation
  • check_circleIdentify opportunities for process improvement and support operational efficiency across HR functions
  • check_circleCoordinate administration of employee benefits programs including medical, dental, vision, and retirement plans
  • check_circleSupport leave administration processes including tracking leave usage and ensuring FMLA compliance

Requirements

  • verifiedBachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Accounting, or related field preferred

Nice to Have

Experience working in Human Resources or Accounting within a nonprofit or unionized environment. Experience administering benefits and leave programs. Experience participating in open enrollment coordination and benefits communication processes. Experience with HRIS and payroll platforms such as iSolved. Experience with other software such as DocuSign, LegalServer, or MIP.
