The Derrickhand serves as a critical support function for the mud module, ensuring the smooth operation of the sack area, mud pumps, and mud pits/shakers. Working under the direction of the Driller but reporting directly to the Rig Manager, this role is essential for maintaining drilling efficiency and safety.
This position requires a high level of alertness and mental stamina to manage a 12-hour tour. You will be responsible for analyzing mud properties, weighing mud, and measuring volume changes every half hour to ensure the drilling operation has the correct chemical mixture. A significant portion of your time will be spent on the monkey board, guiding drill pipe during tripping operations while suspended up to 140+ feet above the rig floor.
The role involves rigorous physical demands, including climbing stairs and ladders, working on steel decking, and navigating mud, snow, and ice. You will perform preventive maintenance on mud pumps, change liners, and supervise floorhands during sack handling. Success in this role requires the ability to respond efficiently to instructions from the Mud Engineer, Driller, or Rig Manager while troubleshooting problems in a decisive manner.
