The Derrickhand serves as a critical support function for the mud module, ensuring the smooth operation of the sack area, mud pumps, and mud pits/shakers. Working under the direction of the Driller but reporting directly to the Rig Manager, this role is essential for maintaining drilling efficiency and safety.
The position requires a high level of mental stamina and alertness to manage complex drilling operations during 12-hour shifts. The Derrickhand acts as a key liaison between the Driller, Mud Engineer, and Rig Manager, executing precise instructions regarding mud properties, chemical mixtures, and equipment maintenance. This role is vital for troubleshooting and problem-solving in a dynamic, high-stakes environment.
This position involves working at significant heights, often 140+ feet above the rig floor on the monkey board, and requires the ability to work while suspended upwards of 90 feet. The work environment includes steel decking, gravel, board roads, and conditions such as mud, snow, and ice. Personnel must be prepared to stand and walk for extended periods and navigate stairs and ladders repetitively while wearing full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
The role operates on a rotational schedule of 7 or 14 days on and 7 or 14 days off. This includes working holidays, weekends, and both day and night shifts.
Candidates must possess a minimum of 3 years of rig experience as a Floorhand or Motorhand for Nabors, or 1 year of experience specifically as a Derrickhand with another drilling company. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to perform all essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations.
