The Derrickhand serves as a critical support function for the mud module, ensuring the smooth operation of the sack area, mud pumps, and mud pits/shakers. Working under the direction of the Driller but reporting directly to the Rig Manager, this role is essential for maintaining drilling efficiency and safety.
The position requires a high level of mental stamina and alertness to manage complex drilling operations during 12-hour shifts. The Derrickhand plays a key part in the tripping process, guiding drill pipe on the monkey board while suspended high above the rig floor. This role demands the ability to work in diverse and challenging conditions, including standing on steel decking, gravel, board roads, and in mud, snow, or ice, often at heights exceeding 140 feet.
This position operates on a rotational schedule, typically 7 or 14 days on and 7 or 14 days off, including holidays, weekends, and night shifts. The environment is physically demanding, requiring the ability to climb stairs and ladders repeatedly, lift heavy items, and perform tasks while wearing full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
Candidates must have a minimum of 3 years of rig experience as a Floorhand or Motorhand for Nabors, or 1 year of experience specifically as a Derrickhand with another drilling company. Applicants should be prepared to demonstrate their ability to perform essential functions, including analyzing mud properties and responding efficiently to instructions from the Mud Engineer, Driller, or Rig Manager.
