Under the general direction of the Lead Operator, the Water Treatment Plant Operator performs skilled technical work to ensure the production and distribution of safe, reliable, and high-quality potable water. This position is critical to maintaining compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, regulations, and Brazosport Water Authority (BWA) policies.
The role involves a dynamic day-to-day rhythm of monitoring, adjusting, and documenting treatment processes. Operators retrieve and analyze samples, perform process control testing, and assist with chemical dosing and equipment operation. A significant portion of the day is dedicated to maintaining accurate data in logs and records, ensuring that water flow, pressure, and chemical treatment levels remain within established guidelines. The Operator also plays a key role in safety, maintaining a clean and orderly work environment while actively supporting BWA safety programs.
This position requires a blend of independent focus and teamwork. Operators must work cooperatively with BWA employees, member city personnel, contractors, regulators, and the public. The role also demands readiness to respond to plant alarms, emergencies, and abnormal operating conditions, taking appropriate corrective actions and notifying supervision promptly. Participation in ongoing training is essential to obtain and maintain required licenses and certifications, including TCEQ operator licensing.
Candidates must possess a valid Texas Class C Motor Vehicle Operator's License with an acceptable driving record. While a current TCEQ Class "C" or higher Water Operator License is preferred at the time of hire, candidates without this license must be able to obtain a Class "D" Water Operator License within 90 days of employment as a condition of continued employment.
The selection process includes pre-employment and, where applicable, random or reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol testing, as well as background checks in accordance with BWA policy and applicable law. All candidates must be available and willing to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and on-call duty as assigned.
