This position serves as a critical leader within the City of Las Cruces Wastewater Department, responsible for ensuring the efficient operation and reliability of our wastewater treatment plants and collection systems. The role goes beyond routine maintenance; it involves leading teams to perform complex repairs on lift stations, pumps, motors, and specialized equipment like Vactor trucks. The mission is to minimize malfunctions, prevent environmental spills, and guarantee continuous service to the community.
As a Grade BC13 supervisor, you will act as a liaison between plant operations and maintenance staff. Your day involves directing work activities, providing technical training to lower-level mechanics, and managing the procurement of parts and supplies. You will be responsible for maintaining odor control equipment, overseeing building repairs, and ensuring that all operations adhere to strict safety standards and standard operating procedures. This is a hands-on leadership role that requires balancing administrative duties with active participation in field repairs.
This is a physically demanding position with a unique work environment. Approximately 85% of the work is performed outdoors, exposing employees to all weather conditions, mechanical hazards, and chemical agents including acids, bases, and hydrogen sulfide. The role requires working in confined, restrictive environments and utilizing Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) when necessary.
Safety is paramount. Employees must be prepared to lift up to 100 pounds, climb, crawl, and work near live electrical wiring. Protective gear including SCBA face shields, chemical aprons, and hearing protection is mandatory. The position is subject to drug testing in accordance with State and Federal regulations and City policies.

Requirements Summary: Candidates must possess a High School Diploma or GED and three years of experience in wastewater plant or system maintenance. Additionally, candidates must hold an NM Level II Wastewater Certification and commit to obtaining Level III certification within one year of hire.
