This position serves as the entry point into the Charleston Water System's (CWS) Water Treatment Plant Operator career path. As an Apprentice, you will work under the direct supervision of the Operations Shift Supervisor and guidance from Journeyman Operators to assist in producing finished water that meets all state and federal regulations.
The role is designed as a comprehensive training capacity within the Operator Apprenticeship Program. You will progress through formal classroom training, on-the-job training, and skills demonstrations, advancing in complexity as you gain proficiency. Successful completion of this program leads to advancement to the Journeyman Operator level.
Your work will take place at the Hanahan Water Treatment Plant, operating on a rotating 12-hour shift schedule (7:00 am – 7:00 pm) covering both day and night cycles. Your daily activities will involve a blend of hands-on technical work and data management.
You will be responsible for monitoring and operating equipment to ensure economical and efficient treatment processes, adjusting chemical dosages, and performing preventive maintenance. A significant portion of your day will involve collecting and analyzing samples, conducting bench-top tests, and maintaining accurate plant operation logs and chemical inventory records. You will also interact with the maintenance department to address equipment issues and may be required to handle deliveries or work under emergency conditions.
The environment is dynamic and requires physical agility. You will navigate varied topography, ascend ladders and stairs, and maneuver large valve mechanisms. The role involves working with chemicals and operating in environments where respiratory protection or self-contained breathing apparatus may be necessary.
Applications for this position are accepted through Sunday, May 17, 2026. Candidates must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license and a high school diploma or GED. While prior experience is not required for the Apprentice level, a strong technical aptitude and a record of dependability are essential.
Successful candidates will be placed at Grade 105 and will be required to pass the Water Operators Examination through the "B" level as outlined in the CWS Apprenticeship Program. Failure to meet training requirements or licensing deadlines may result in termination.
This role offers a clear trajectory within the Commission. Upon full proficiency as defined by the Operator Apprenticeship Program, you will advance to the Journeyman Operator level. Further progression may lead to the Operations Shift Supervisor role, contingent upon individual qualifications and noted job progressions.
