This position is responsible for performing intermediate technical work to ensure the delivery of potable and palatable water that meets or exceeds federal and State standards. The role serves as a critical link in the operational chain, managing the safe and efficient operation of chemical and plant controls while maintaining plant equipment in proper condition.
Working under the direction of the Water Treatment Plant Shift Leader and Superintendent, the operator monitors the entire treatment process, making necessary adjustments to keep operations within established guidelines. The day-to-day responsibilities include starting and stopping pumps, motors, and chemical feeders, as well as performing routine process control tests such as chlorine residual, pH, alkalinity, and jar tests. The role also involves maintaining laboratory apparatus, scheduling state-mandated water quality samples, and operating filter controls to manage head loss and flow rates.
Beyond daily operations, the position requires a commitment to continuous learning and safety. Operators must attend 30 hours of training every three years to maintain certification and perform split microbiological samples annually. The role also demands readiness to respond to emergencies at the water plant to maintain uninterrupted operations.
