The Unit Secretary serves as the administrative backbone of the Oncology Nursing Unit at RWJUH Somerset. This position is vital for facilitating effective communication and coordinating non-clinical operations, ensuring that nursing staff, patients, families, and visitors receive compassionate and timely care in a specialized oncology setting.
In this role, you will act as the first point of contact, greeting and assisting everyone who enters the unit with courtesy and professionalism. Your day involves managing the flow of information by answering unit telephone calls, directing inquiries, and relaying messages accurately. You will also maintain the integrity of patient records by organizing charts and ensuring documentation is complete and up to date.
Beyond administrative tasks, you will coordinate patient admissions, transfers, and discharges within the electronic health record system and communicate with other hospital departments to arrange diagnostic tests, treatments, or transport services. You will support the nursing team by preparing and distributing documents, while maintaining strict confidentiality of patient and unit information in accordance with HIPAA and hospital policies.
This position operates within a clinical unit setting characterized by frequent interactions with patients, families, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare team members. The environment is fast-paced, requiring the ability to multitask effectively. As part of an oncology unit, you may be exposed to emotionally stressful situations related to patient care, making resilience and strong attention to detail essential qualities for success in this role.
