As an ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) Specialist, you will operate and maintain ECMO circuits for patients requiring long-term pulmonary and/or cardiopulmonary support. Functioning interdependently under the direction and clinical supervision of an ECMO physician, you will follow standing orders and parameters to ensure optimal patient care.
Your day involves assisting physicians, perfusionists, and clinical staff with the initiation, conduct, and conclusion of ECMO therapies. This includes managing circuit or component changes, priming, blood bank communications, and hemofiltration. You will provide detailed examinations of the circuit to ensure integrity, maintain continuity during patient handling, and reduce the risk of compromise through regular assessments. Additionally, you will assess blood gas values, anticoagulation parameters, and other laboratory results to keep patients in a state of well-being, while monitoring and titrating infusions and adjusting pump flows as needed.
You will embody the SpecialtyCare Values of Integrity, Care, Urgency, and Improvement, demonstrating a culture of safety through comprehensive hand-offs that cover all aspects of the patient's care and the state of the ECMO circuit.
