This position serves as an Air Reserve Technician (ART) Officer at the 709 Airlift Squadron, holding the military rank of O-5/Lieutenant Colonel. The primary purpose of this role is to manage the total operations function of the squadron on a daily basis, ensuring operational readiness and effectiveness. As a key management position within the Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC), the incumbent formulates, determines, and influences unit policies critical to mobilization capability.
The role bridges the gap between active duty and reserve forces, requiring the incumbent to maintain Air Force Reserve requirements while performing ART duties. While regular assignments are primarily ART-focused, the incumbent may also be assigned non-ART duties, generally not to exceed 30 percent of total responsibilities. The work schedule is aligned to allow full participation in unit training assemblies.
The incumbent directs all operations and maintenance training programs, implementing flying and ground training requirements based on directives from higher headquarters. This involves analyzing accident reports and mission readiness data to develop operational plans, standard operating procedures, and implementing instructions for areas such as electronic warfare, tactics, flight operations, and intelligence.
Beyond planning, the role involves significant personnel management. The incumbent supervises subordinate staff, advises the Group Commander on selections for supervisory positions, and manages promotions and reassignments in consideration of mission requirements and diversity objectives. The position also requires representing the Air Force Reserve to dignitaries and high-ranking personnel with exceptional professionalism.
A unique aspect of this role is the requirement to fly as an aircrew member in unit aircraft. Depending on mission needs, the incumbent may serve as a flight instructor or flight examiner. The nature of these flying activities is dictated by war plans, enemy threats, and classified intelligence gathering. Periodically, the incumbent must pass standardization and evaluation flight examinations, including written tests and actual flight performance, to demonstrate required abilities.
Candidates must submit official documentation, including an AFTAR 209 or official flying hour report, and any document showing the date of receipt of aviation service aeronautical orders. Failure to provide these documents in the supporting documents section will result in an ineligible rating.
This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP), subject to pre-employment and random drug testing as a condition of employment. Selected employees must sign a mobility agreement, acknowledging that geographic mobility is a condition of employment for all ART Officer positions. Additionally, the position is covered by the Lautenberg Amendment regarding the Gun Control Act.
The Air Force Reserve is an equal opportunity employer. Selections for subordinate supervisory positions and other personnel actions are made in consideration of EEO and diversity objectives. The organization values candidates who can demonstrate leadership, managerial abilities, and the capacity to mentor and motivate staff.
Note: This position requires a Top Secret security clearance. Retired military personnel are generally ineligible unless they hold an active Air Force Reserve assignment.
