The Office of the Illinois Secretary of State, led by Secretary Alexi Giannoulias, serves the citizens of Illinois with integrity and efficiency. Within the Capitol Complex in Springfield, the Engineering Division ensures the safe and reliable operation of critical infrastructure, including the Power Plant, which supports the state's governmental functions.
As a Stationary Engineer, you are the guardian of the facility's mechanical heart. Operating under general supervision, your primary mission is to ensure that complex systems—including high-pressure boilers, turbines, generators, and building automation systems—run safely, economically, and within established limits. This role is vital for maintaining the continuous operation of the Capitol Complex.
Your day involves a dynamic mix of technical operation and hands-on maintenance. You will start up, regulate, and shut down equipment while monitoring gauges, meters, and computerized controls to optimize performance. Beyond operation, you will perform repairs ranging from complete overhauls to replacing specific components like valves, gaskets, or bearings. You will also act as a safety inspector, routinely checking devices to detect potential mechanical problems and correcting them before they escalate. In some instances, you may direct the work of apprentice engineers and boiler tenders, ensuring the entire team operates cohesively.
