Harlem Grown is an independent, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to inspire youth to lead healthy and ambitious lives through mentorship and hands-on education in urban farming, sustainability, and nutrition. Founded in 2011 by Tony Hillery, the organization has grown from a single school partnership to operating 14 urban agricultural sites in Central Harlem, Manhattan. These sites, ranging from soil-based farms to hydroponic greenhouses and mushroom chambers, serve as classrooms and venues to cultivate a connection to the environment and food among young people.
Harlem Grown cultivates deep community roots by growing fresh food, strong youth, and lasting relationships. We meet children where they live, learn, and grow—offering opportunities that extend beyond our farms to the classroom and into their futures. Through our Food and Farm Education programs, including summer camps, in-school and after-school programming, mobile education, and farm tours, we help youth build healthy habits, leadership skills, and a deeper connection to their community. Our urban farms provide free produce and nutritious meals for families while creating joyful spaces for connection and support. Additionally, our programs increase economic opportunity for families and develop leadership and advocacy skills so participants can drive transformational change in their communities.
The Sports Specialist plays a key role in Harlem Grown's DYCD COMPASS after-school and summer programs by designing and leading engaging sports and physical recreational activities for participants in grades K-5. This position is dedicated to creating a fun and inclusive environment where participants of all abilities can participate and build self-confidence. The Sports Specialist will work closely with Food and Farm Activity Specialists, Group Leaders, the Program Coordinator, and the Program Director to deliver high-quality, age-appropriate programming that promotes teamwork, fitness, and skill development. In alignment with Harlem Grown's mission, this role may also support the preparation and facilitation of food, farm, and wellness education activities as needed. Through interactive lessons, creative projects, and real-world connections, the Sports Specialist supports Harlem Grown's mission to inspire youth.
At Harlem Grown, diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the heart of what we do. We are an equal opportunity employer, committed to creating a culture of inclusivity where each individual feels their identity, experience, and values are represented and supported. We are dedicated to creating a space where children, especially those of color, are given the opportunity and skills to lead healthy and ambitious lives. We strongly believe in building a team that reflects and appreciates the underrepresented population of students, families, and people that we serve. We invite you to become a member of our family.
