This position is located within the Land Resources Bureau, specifically the Land Stewardship Section and the Land Management Unit. The Land Management Unit is responsible for overseeing the planning and implementation of natural resource management functions across District conservation lands. The team operates within the Everglades Land Management Region, managing over 62,500 acres of conservation lands in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties.
The Everglades Supervising Scientist serves as a seasoned scientist responsible for administering resource and public use land management functions. This role is pivotal in ensuring the effective and efficient management of natural resources across political boundaries in South Florida. The incumbent will oversee the planning and execution of critical land management activities, including prescribed burning, invasive plant control, mechanical vegetation treatment, and restoration efforts.
Day-to-day operations involve a blend of administrative oversight and active field engagement. You will provide direct supervisory leadership to two full-time employees, assist in recruitment, and develop regional annual operational plans and budgets. The role requires close coordination with District Recreation staff and external partners, such as the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and local county staff, to manage recreational facilities, research, and public outreach.
A significant portion of the work takes place in the field, where you will coordinate prescribed fire efforts, operate specialized equipment like airboats and UTVs, and provide direct support to field staff. The position demands adaptability to remote, wet, and heavily vegetated environments, often under inclement weather conditions. Additionally, the role includes a commitment to emergency management, requiring support before, during, and after major storm events or declared emergencies.
