This role is situated within the Behavioral and Mental Health department at UNM Health Systems, specifically supporting the Admitting and Registration functions at the University Presbyterian Campus (UPC). The team serves as the critical first point of contact for patients entering the healthcare system, ensuring a seamless transition from arrival to care while navigating complex financial and insurance landscapes.
As a key member of the Admitting and Registration team, you will manage pre-registration and registration functions for Ambulatory and Outpatient Operations. This position is vital for verifying insurance coverage, benefits, and required referrals prior to patient visits. You will act as the primary liaison between patients, clinical staff, and insurance payors, ensuring that all necessary authorizations are in place for surgeries, admissions, and specialty clinic appointments.
Your day will involve a blend of high-volume data entry, patient interaction, and financial navigation. You will interview patients and families to collect accurate demographic and financial information, assisting them in understanding their coverage options. A significant portion of the role involves guiding patients through financial assistance programs, including UNM Health Systems charity care, NM Medicaid, and other state and federal programs. You will also serve as the first contact for Persons in Custody of Law Enforcement Agencies (PICLEA) arriving for care.
While this is a non-patient care role, you will be deeply involved in the patient journey by coordinating appointments, managing valuables, and ensuring accurate documentation in systems like Cerner and Siemens. You will also handle professional phone inquiries via the ACD system and provide after-hours information desk coverage. The role requires maintaining open communication with clinical areas to ensure process flow remains tight and performing training for registration personnel to uphold business practices.
Candidates are evaluated based on their relevant experience and ability to navigate complex healthcare systems. The selection process focuses on identifying individuals who can effectively manage sensitive patient data, demonstrate strong customer service skills, and possess the adaptability required for a dynamic hospital environment.
UNM Health Systems is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace where all employees are valued. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status.
