The Friendship House Association of American Indians is a 501(c)(3), tax-exempt organization established in 1963 to serve American Indians who were relocated from their reservations to the San Francisco Bay Area. As a cultural center with co-located services and community activities, Friendship House is uniquely poised to serve American Indians across the lifespan.
Our overarching goal is to promote healing and wellness by providing a continuum of services that build resiliency to substance abuse. We strive to strengthen connections to family and community to improve the spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical well-being of our clients. Friendship House operates three program facilities: the Friendship House American Indian Healing Center (an 80-bed residential treatment facility in San Francisco), the Friendship House American Indian Lodge (a 9-bed facility for women and their children in Oakland), and the Friendship House Youth Program (an afterschool youth center in San Francisco).
While many best practices in substance abuse treatment are effective for diverse backgrounds, few have been evaluated specifically for Native people. Based on more than 28 years of tracking our own performance, we know that American Indians achieve the best outcomes when Native culture and cultural practices are honored and integrated into our service delivery. Traditional methods such as prayer, songs, drum circles, sweat lodge ceremonies, talking circles, and Walking the Red Road Medicine Way are integral to our residential treatment program.

Founded in 1963, Friendship House is one of the first and longest-standing organizations dedicated to supporting American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities. We have a clear mission: to provide culturally centered support and healing for AI/AN individuals and families facing substance use and mental health challenges. With a legacy of 60 years, our services continue to empower our community in San Francisco and beyond. Our commitment extends beyond treatment. At the heart of Friendship House is a vision to foster community resilience, cultural revitalization, and generational healing. We operate two residential facilities—an 80-bed treatment center for adults in San Francisco and a 9-bed facility for mothers with young children in Oakland. Each provides not just clinical care but a space of cultural reconnection, community support, and holistic healing. Central to our future is Village SF—an ambitious initiative that embodies our belief in cultural reclamation and environmental stewardship. Village SF will offer a Wellness Center with supportive housing, a health clinic, ceremonial spaces, and a rooftop garden, creating a hub where urban Native people can gather, heal, and celebrate their culture. Supported by a coalition of local, state, and federal leaders, Village SF is a testament to the strength and resilience of Native communities in the Bay Area. We invite you to learn more about our work, support our initiatives, and join us in building a future rooted in healing, tradition, and community strength.
