Under the direction of the Continuing Legal Education Director, this position manages the operation of the Publications Department for the South Carolina Bar. The role is central to the Bar's mission of providing high-quality educational resources, serving as the staff liaison to the Publications Committee to guide the development of major works, practice manuals, monographs, and software.
The Publications Manager acts as the strategic architect for the department's output, preparing both short-range and long-range plans for publication topics and authors. This involves a dynamic day-to-day rhythm that blends editorial oversight with business management. You will recruit and monitor authors, oversee the editing of manuscripts, and coordinate complex production schedules with printers, software developers, and vendors. The role requires a unique blend of legal acumen and business savvy, as you will work closely with the Marketing Manager to develop pricing strategies, promotional events, and sales data.
Beyond content development, the position carries significant financial and operational responsibilities. You will conduct reviews of publication activity against budget projections, prepare the annual publication budget, and manage the complex process of reviewing and approving royalties for authors and vendors. The role also extends to event support, where you will staff conventions, seminars, and trade shows as requested, ensuring the seamless delivery of the Bar's educational programs.
Candidates are expected to possess a J.D. degree with relevant business or law practice experience. The selection process will prioritize individuals who demonstrate strong financial management skills, marketing acumen, and the ability to supervise support personnel effectively. Applicants must be organized, detail-oriented, and capable of working with minimal supervision to meet critical deadlines under pressure.
The South Carolina Bar is committed to providing equal employment opportunities without regard to any statuses protected by federal, state, or local law. We value a team player who possesses the initiative and self-reliance to undertake projects and see them through to completion. This role offers the opportunity to work in a professional environment where legal expertise meets operational excellence, contributing directly to the advancement of the legal community in South Carolina.
