Juneau is recruiting for Police & Fire Public Safety Dispatchers to join a team that serves the community from behind the scenes. This is a personally rewarding and challenging career with a significant positive impact on the public. As a dispatcher, you will be the critical link between callers in need and the responders who assist them, including police, fire, EMS, the Mobile Crisis Team, and the Sobering Center.
On any given day, your work may range from handling a parking complaint to providing CPR instructions, mediating arguments, or even helping to deliver babies over the phone. You will answer phones and 9-1-1 lines, manage radio channels, and track all activity in a computer-aided dispatch system. The role requires switching rapidly between tasks, maintaining exceptional attention to detail, and making critically important decisions based on policy while adapting to the conditions on the fly.
New dispatchers receive approximately seven months of on-the-job training to master call processing, computer systems, and radio procedures. The work environment is fast-paced and often stressful, with some days being emotionally draining. However, the team culture is built on strong support; between structured training, a robust Wellness program, and peer support teams, you will develop the coping skills necessary to bounce back from tough calls.
We currently have four vacancies to fill and are reviewing applicants as they apply. If you have applied after the positions are filled, you will be notified. We encourage all interested candidates to apply in a timely fashion.
