Our mission is to ensure the physical, operational, and financial integrity of the regional flood risk management system in southeastern Louisiana. We serve as a defense against floods and storm surge from hurricanes by working with local, regional, state, and federal partners to plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain projects that reduce the probability and risk of flooding for residents and businesses within our jurisdiction.
The Orleans Levee District Police Department patrols and inspects the levees and floodwalls surrounding Orleans Parish, including East Jefferson, Orleans, and St. Bernard parishes. The department's duty is to check various gauges and flood structures to ensure the integrity of the levee system while protecting lives and property. Officers enforce federal, state, and local laws through active mobile and foot patrols, performing responsible, commissioned law enforcement duties while armed and uniformed.
As an emergency-oriented agency, the Orleans Levee District plays a critical role in protecting residents from tidal surge, wind-driven water, and river flooding. During emergencies such as Mississippi River flooding or Hurricane Tropical Storm events, officers may be required to be on call and report for duty immediately, remaining on duty until released by the Appointing Authority.
To be considered for this vacancy, applicants must possess Civil Service test scores for the 2100-Protective Services Exam (PSE). The Orleans Levee District does not accept testing exemptions; candidates without current scores must apply to take the test before their application can be considered.
