This dynamic outpatient position is based at New Mexico's only Level 1 trauma center and the state's only teaching hospital. The successful applicant will join the main outpatient rehabilitation department, which is composed of highly trained and specialty certified Occupational Therapists (O.T.s) and Physical Therapists (P.T.s). The team also collaborates closely with Physical Therapy Assistants (P.T.A.s) to optimally meet the needs of clients across all age groups, from neonates to geriatric patients.
The department fosters a robust educational environment. Many therapists actively teach within the UNM Physical Therapy and/or Occupational Therapy educational programs, and the department supports a strong student internship program. New graduates are welcome to apply.
As a member of the UNMH outpatient team, you will organize and deliver medically-prescribed physical therapy to restore function and prevent disability following disease, injury, or loss of a body part. Your work will focus on an orthopaedic and primary care scope, requiring you to evaluate patients, determine treatment goals, and outline therapy delivery plans involving physical means such as exercise, massage, heat, sound, water, light, and electricity.
In this role, you will consult with medical staff on patient care, educate patients and caregivers on specialized equipment and safety, and adapt therapy techniques to meet individual needs. You will also conduct training for medical and nursing personnel, supervise students and volunteers, and assess home environments to recommend modifications that maximize daily living activities. A key part of your day involves maintaining detailed documentation, processing billing, and ensuring strict adherence to hospital policies and patient safety protocols.
This is a Per Diem (PRN) position with a 0.05 FTE allocation working days. Compensation includes significant shift differentials: 17% for weekday nights, 26% for weekend nights, and 15% for weekend days. Final compensation is based on factors including experience, education, and organizational considerations.
Applicants must hold a Bachelor's Degree in a related discipline and possess a valid New Mexico Physical Therapist License (or Temporary License).
