This position serves as a vital support pillar within the Surgical Specialty Unit (4-S), bridging clinical care and administrative efficiency. As a Medical Assistant, you will be the first point of contact for patients across a diverse demographic spectrum, ranging from neonates to geriatric adults. The role is designed to ensure the seamless flow of patient care by managing both the physical environment of the nursing station and the direct clinical needs of patients under the supervision of providers and nurses.
You will play an active role in the Patient Centered Medical Home model, fostering a culture where patient safety is proactive rather than reactive. From the moment a patient enters the unit, you will be responsible for gathering comprehensive medical histories, performing initial screenings, and recording vital signs. Your day-to-day impact extends to facilitating treatment procedures, managing sterile fields, and assisting with complex tasks such as catheterization and phlebotomy. Beyond clinical duties, you will maintain the therapeutic environment by managing supplies, ensuring sanitation, and balancing the financial aspects of patient services.
Working within the Clinical Nursing Support department, you will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team dedicated to high-quality surgical and specialty care. This unit requires a professional who can adapt quickly to the needs of patients at extreme risk, ensuring their safety and well-being are prioritized at every minute. The team relies on your ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, and providers to coordinate admissions, transfers, and discharges while maintaining accurate documentation.
This is a 0.90 Full-Time position based on the Nights shift. To support our team members working non-standard hours, the role includes specific shift differentials: 17% for weekday nights, 26% for weekend nights, and 15% for weekend days. A sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates. Compensation is determined by a variety of factors, including experience, education, and organizational needs.
Candidates must possess a High School diploma or GED equivalent and be a graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program, or have two years of relevant experience documented on a DD Form 214. Successful applicants will need to complete specific UNMH certification courses, including Medication Administration, Phlebotomy, and Indwelling Urinary Catheter training, within 90 days of hire. CPR for Healthcare Providers or Professional Rescuers certification is required within 30 days.
We value diversity and encourage applications from bilingual candidates fluent in English, Spanish, Keres, Tewa, Tiwa, Towa, Zuni, or Navajo.
