This position serves as a critical component of the UNMH Rapid Response team, providing direct patient care across the entire lifespan—from neonates to geriatric patients. Operating under the guidelines of the UNMH Rapid Response Medical Director and within the scope defined by the New Mexico Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, the role functions as a dedicated patient advocate. The primary mission is to stabilize patients and guide care autonomously until specialized providers arrive, ensuring a seamless transition from emergency response to definitive treatment.
The day-to-day environment is dynamic and high-stakes. You will respond to both patient emergencies within the hospital and non-patient emergencies, performing advanced life support procedures such as intubation, defibrillation, and medication administration. Beyond clinical duties, the role requires maintaining a safe, therapeutic environment for patients and families, managing equipment and supplies, and fostering strong professional relationships with physicians, visitors, and hospital staff. A proactive approach to patient safety is essential, involving the identification of risks, reporting of errors, and encouragement of patient participation in their own care.
This role offers a competitive compensation package designed to support staff well-being and safety. In addition to the base rate, employees receive a $6.00/hr Safety Incentive Pay. Shift differentials are applied to accommodate the rotating schedule: 17% for weekday nights, 26% for weekend nights, and 15% for weekend days. A sign-on bonus and relocation assistance are available for qualified candidates. Compensation is determined by factors including experience, education, and organizational needs.
Candidates must meet specific credentialing requirements, including an Emergency Medical Technician Paramedic License, Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification, and PALS. Essential experience includes at least one year in a related field. The hiring process involves verifying credentials, obtaining necessary security clearances (including MDC clearance), and completing required training courses within specified timelines (e.g., UNMH basic arrhythmia, Arterial Blood Gas, and CEVO courses).
Safety is paramount in this role. Strict policies prohibit cell phones and smart devices on persons unless a documented medical condition exists. Employees must be prepared for significant physical hazards, including exposure to combative patients, biohazardous materials, and weather conditions. The role may involve working in close proximity to incarcerated individuals and requires adherence to random alcohol and substance testing protocols. The team culture emphasizes continuous professional growth through education sessions, in-services, and workshops, ensuring staff remain current with the latest medical literature and practices.
