As a Mortgage Underwriter at M&T Bank, you play a critical role in ensuring the sound credit quality and saleability of residential mortgage loans. You will be responsible for underwriting conventional loans, both conforming and non-conforming, by rigorously applying product and investor guidelines. Your work ensures that every loan meets the strict standards required by federal registration under the SAFE Act, as well as the specific requirements of secondary market investors.
This position is central to the loan lifecycle, requiring you to perform comprehensive risk assessments on both credit and collateral. You will interpret Automated Underwriting System (AUS) findings, such as DU and LP, and conduct manual underwriting when necessary. Beyond the initial approval, you will actively manage post-closing issues and verify loan documentation through monthly sampling to maintain accuracy and compliance.
The role demands frequent, day-to-day communication with a diverse network of internal and external stakeholders. You will work closely with Account Executives, Loan Officers, Broker Coordinators, and Loan Processors to expedite the decision-making process. Additionally, you will serve as a key point of contact for external customers, including Realtors and Mortgage Brokers, helping to facilitate smooth loan closings.
Staying current is a core part of your daily routine. You will take the initiative to keep abreast of changes in investor guidelines and M&T Bank policies, ensuring that your underwriting decisions reflect the latest industry practices and regulatory requirements.
