As a Meter Reader, you will play a vital role in the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority's mission to ensure accurate billing and reliable utility services. This position is essential for maintaining the integrity of our water and gas infrastructure, requiring you to navigate assigned routes to read meters, verify addresses, and manage device installations.
Your day involves a mix of driving, walking, and hands-on technical work. You will be responsible for installing and programming Automated Meter Reading (AMR) and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) devices, troubleshooting issues, and performing necessary repairs. The role demands frequent interaction with the physical environment, including inspecting meters, cleaning stuck units, and reporting hazardous conditions such as dangerous locations, gas odors, or exposed wiring to your supervisor.
In addition to routine duties, you will handle critical operational tasks such as turning delinquent accounts off and on, performing emergency turn-offs for burst pipes, and conducting re-reads to verify billing data. As an essential employee, you may be required to perform alternate duties during emergencies to support the utility's continuity.
Candidates must possess a valid State of North Carolina driver's license and have at least six months of general work experience. While meter reader experience is preferred, a high school diploma or GED is the minimum educational requirement. The selection process focuses on verifying these qualifications and assessing the ability to perform the physical demands of the role, including driving assigned routes and handling equipment.
