About the Role
As a Mental Health Worker (MHW) in an acute psychiatric care facility, you will serve as a vital link between patients and the nursing team. Under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN), your primary mission is to provide direct, supportive service that ensures patient safety, promotes recovery, and maintains a therapeutic environment.
This role is designed for individuals who can de-escalate potential conflicts and support patients through anxiety or agitation. Your day-to-day life involves more than just supervision; you will be the eyes and ears of the unit, observing patient behaviors to document both objective data and subjective inferences, such as suicidal tendencies or medication side effects. By reinforcing treatment goals during continual interactions, you help patients navigate their individualized plans of care.
You will be responsible for creating a safe and clean environment that adheres to strict fire safety and infection control standards. This includes assisting patients with hygiene needs, monitoring dietary intake, and escorting patients to appointments, legal proceedings, or home placements. In addition to clinical support, you may be called upon to provide testimony during legal proceedings while strictly maintaining patient confidentiality.
