The Laborer III (Sewer Maintenance) position is designed for an employee capable of performing tasks of more than ordinary difficulty. This role differs from lower-level laborer classes by requiring a greater degree of skill and knowledge of departmental operations. Employees in this class work with less supervision and are expected to lead the crew when the supervisor is absent from the work site.
In this capacity, you will lay out the details of specific assignments, constantly check work in process, and perform routine tasks independently after initial instruction. You will assist other laborers and equipment operators in maintaining and repairing the facilities of the stormwater and wastewater collection system. The role involves a dynamic day-to-day environment, ranging from the installation and repair of sewer mains, hydrants, and gate valves to responding to citizen inquiries regarding public works services.
Your responsibilities include operating heavy equipment such as vacuum trucks, CCTV units, jetter trucks, dump trucks, backhoes, and snowplows. You will also perform manual labor tasks like inspecting manholes, fixing sewer laterals, and restoring streets, sidewalks, and curbs. During snow operations, you will load trucks with de-icing materials and apply sand or brine to icy areas. The role requires a collaborative spirit to promote a harmonious work environment and the ability to respond to emergencies, including flooding and mandatory overtime situations.
