The Wastewater Collection System Operator II/III serves as a critical frontline resource for maintaining the integrity and functionality of the municipal wastewater infrastructure. This role is designed to ensure the continuous operation of the collection system by managing the repair, rehabilitation, and installation of sewer lines, manholes, and associated appurtenances.
Operators in this position act as both skilled technicians and heavy equipment specialists. The day-to-day work involves a dynamic mix of field operations, including operating backhoes, track-hoes, bobcats, and trenchers to excavate and repair underground utilities. Beyond heavy machinery, the role requires hands-on maintenance of the system through cleaning, inspecting, and troubleshooting sewer lines, pump stations, and vortexes. Operators also play a key role in system diagnostics, utilizing CCTV technology, flow monitoring, and smoke testing to identify sources of inflow and infiltration.
This position is essential for public health and environmental protection, requiring a high degree of physical stamina and adaptability to work in varied conditions, from uneven construction sites to confined spaces like deep manholes. The role also includes a 24-hour on-call rotation to address emergency conditions and ensure system reliability around the clock.
