This position serves as a highly responsible role within the criminal justice system, dedicated to maintaining a safe and secure environment for youth, staff, and the community. As a Juvenile Justice Detention Officer II, you will act as a positive role model, demonstrating leadership while treating all individuals with dignity and respect.
You will be responsible for the safe and secure custody of detained youth, ensuring their constitutional rights are upheld with special attention to legal, medical, and mental health needs. Your day-to-day duties involve supervising youth in all activities, managing admissions and releases, and utilizing appropriate levels of verbal or physical intervention (Protective Action Response) to maintain order. You will also assist in dispensing medications, conducting facility inspections for contraband, and preparing detailed reports on incidents and youth movements.
In the absence of a supervisor, you will assume acting supervisor responsibilities. This role requires constant vigilance, including performing frequent checks on youth in room confinement or those identified as suicidal, and utilizing emergency equipment such as CPR and AEDs when necessary. You will also transport and escort youth to medical, judicial, and social service facilities as required.
This is a pool announcement for multiple positions. Successful candidates will be subject to comprehensive background checks, including sex offender, criminal (state, local, and national), and pre-employment drug screenings. Candidates not currently in the state system as a direct care worker will be required to pass the Ergometric's IMPACT Assessment and Training Test to measure suitability for working with juvenile justice-involved youth.
Certification in accordance with the State of Florida Department of Juvenile Justice direct care training policy is required, or must be obtained within 180 days of employment. Veterans' Preference is available for eligible candidates under Chapter 295, Florida Statutes; supporting documentation must be attached to the application.
