The Planning & Zoning Internship offers students and recent graduates a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience within the Planning & Community Development Department. This role serves as a bridge between academic study and professional practice, immersing participants in the daily operations of local government planning.
Interns will work closely with department staff to support critical initiatives ranging from land use planning and zoning administration to geographic information systems (GIS) and community engagement. The position provides exposure to the full development review process, long-range planning strategies, and the nuances of public service.
Your work will be a blend of research, analysis, and direct community interaction. You might spend your morning analyzing zoning ordinances or updating GIS maps, followed by assisting with the preparation of meeting agendas and public reports. Afternoons could involve attending public hearings, supporting development review tracking, or engaging directly with residents and developers to provide customer service. The role is designed to foster professional growth through a variety of tasks, from maintaining sensitive databases to participating in special departmental projects.
