About the Department

Stanford's Department of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation (DAPER) is the premier intercollegiate athletics program in the country. As the proud Home of Champions, we lead the nation with 138 NCAA championship titles and a legacy of sustained excellence, including multiple Women's Capital One Cup victories and 26 Learfield Director's Cup wins. We support nearly 900 student-athletes across 36 intercollegiate teams and drive the university's physical education, recreation, and wellness initiatives. Our dedicated staff embody a culture of excellence, embracing our mission of scholar-athleticism and exemplifying a relentless championship spirit guided by "The DAPER Way."

About the Role

The Instructor/Equine Educational Manager serves as a vital link within the Red Barn Student Equestrian Center, reporting to the Executive Director and Head Coach. This role is designed for those ready to inspire champions by blending instruction, facility management, and horse care. You will aid in the administration of equestrian programs, instruct students and teams, and assist in the daily management of Stanford's horses. The position requires an onsite presence with availability for weekends and evenings, fostering a dynamic environment where you will help shape the next generation of riders and leaders.

The Day-to-Day Experience

Your work will span instruction, staff development, and horse management. You will teach a variety of horse classes, from foundational unmounted work to advanced riding and leadership skills. Beyond the saddle, you will collaborate with instructors and coaches to deliver clinics focused on teaching objectives and horse training. You will also serve as a liaison for horse training plans, assisting in the onboarding of new horses and managing stablehands to ensure the highest standards of care. This role demands sound judgment, critical thinking, and the ability to work independently while maintaining a safe, cohesive team environment.

Why Stanford

Stanford University has revolutionized the way we live and enriches the world. Supporting this mission is our diverse and dedicated staff of 17,000. We offer a unique culture that empowers you with the freedom to grow through career development programs and tuition reimbursement, a caring culture with generous time-off and family care resources, and access to world-class health and fitness facilities. From historic sculptures and trails to enviable commuter resources, Stanford provides an environment where you can discover, learn, and thrive.

Hiring Process & Application

Interested candidates should submit their application through the university's portal. The University will provide reasonable accommodations to applicants and employees with disabilities; those requiring assistance for the application or hiring process should contact Stanford University Human Resources. Stanford is an equal employment opportunity and affirmative action employer, considering all qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status.

Integrity & Culture

This position, along with all DAPER coaches and staff, is responsible for the integrity of Stanford's intercollegiate athletics program and the reputation of the University. Staff are expected to maintain the highest standards of conduct, ensuring that their involvement with Athletics Department activities does not negatively impact relationships with faculty, staff, students, and alumni. We are committed to promoting a culture of safety and compliance with all University policies, NCAA rules, and Conference regulations.
