As a Highway Maintenance Laborer with INDOT's South Bend Unit, you will work on Indiana highways and interstates to keep roads clean and safe. This entry-level position offers opportunities for career advancement and serves as a vital link in maintaining the state's infrastructure. Your day-to-day work involves performing general maintenance, picking up debris, filling potholes, and maintaining drainage systems. You will also assist with traffic control, particularly during emergency road closures, and perform snow and ice removal during the winter.
While the position is normally scheduled Monday through Friday, it requires mandatory overtime for emergency operations, including winter weather events. This role is essential for ensuring the safety and mobility of our communities.
Your work will be guided by strict adherence to INDOT safety policies and procedures. You will operate basic highway maintenance and traffic equipment to repair and clean highways and rights-of-way. Daily tasks include moving and loading supplies, performing routine equipment maintenance such as minor repairs and pre-trip inspections, and executing emergency response activities like lane closures and barricade placement.
Depending on your specific assignment, you may also serve as a Traffic Inventory Specialist. In this capacity, you will maintain and install traffic signs and pavement markings, manage inventory of supplies and equipment, and operate computerized inventory control systems. Attendance at the assigned worksite is an essential function of this position.
To join our team, candidates must possess a valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or be willing to obtain one within the first 90 days of employment. CDL training is provided onsite by certified INDOT staff. Candidates with a current CDL and required endorsements will earn an additional $1 per hour.
