As a Highway Technician, you will work on Indiana highways and interstates performing general maintenance to keep the roads clean and safe. This is an entry-level position with opportunities for career advancement. You will be part of INDOT's Bluffton Unit, where you will help maintain the infrastructure that connects our communities.
Your day will involve operating basic highway maintenance and traffic equipment to maintain, repair, and clean highways and rights-of-way. You will move and load supplies and materials, perform regular inspections, and conduct routine equipment maintenance such as minor repairs, preventative maintenance, refueling, and pre-trip inspections.
Winter operations are a key component of the role, requiring you to perform snow and ice removal. You will also engage in emergency response activities, including clean-up, traffic control, lane closures, and the placement of signs and barricades. Depending on your specific assignment, you may also serve as a Traffic Inventory Specialist, managing the receipt, inspection, and distribution of traffic signs, lighting poles, and other equipment while maintaining inventory records.
This role requires mandatory overtime for emergency operations, including winter weather events. You will work at assigned worksites and must be able to endure exposure to inclement weather while performing physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing, and walking for long periods.
Candidates with a current CDL and endorsements required by the district will earn an additional $1 per hour. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL and endorsements required by the district and will then earn the additional $1 per hour. CDL training is provided onsite by certified INDOT staff.
