INDOT has a number of innovative programs and projects, including Public-Private Partnerships, Green Initiatives, and cutting-edge uses of materials and assets. Whether you are an established professional in the transportation field or just starting your career, INDOT has exciting and challenging opportunities for you.
The Highway Assets Inspection Technician is a pivotal role within INDOT's Crawfordsville District, focused on performing inventory, quality control, and quality assurance inspections for INDOT-owned small culverts. This position serves as the eyes and ears of the department in the field, ensuring that critical infrastructure is maintained to the highest standards.
In this role, you will act independently or lead a two-person team to visually and physically inspect assets, evaluating maintenance needs and assigning condition ratings. You will utilize mobile tablets to log GPS locations and input inspection data directly into asset management databases. Your work ensures that engineers have accurate, timely reports to guide follow-up actions and maintenance strategies. Beyond inspections, you will be an integral part of the district's operational efficiency, assisting asset engineers and maintenance teams while maintaining the inspection equipment you rely on daily.
Your day will be dynamic and varied, driven by the needs of the highway system. You will operate basic highway maintenance and traffic equipment to maintain, repair, and clean highways and rights-of-way. Safety is paramount, and you will strictly comply with all INDOT safety policies and procedures.
The role requires adaptability to changing conditions. During winter months, you will perform snow and ice removal operations. In emergencies, you may be called upon to manage traffic control, bridge closures, lane closures, and the placement of signs and barricades. You will also handle routine equipment maintenance, including minor repairs, preventative maintenance, refueling, and pre-trip inspections. Documentation is a key part of your workflow, requiring you to enter data into the Work Management System (WMS) and maintain records of your activities.
Depending on your specific assignment, your day might involve specialized tasks such as inspecting bridge structures, operating heavy equipment like graders or backhoes, calibrating herbicide application equipment, or supporting construction projects with material testing. You will coordinate closely with your supervisor to ensure materials and equipment are available, and you will communicate feedback on employee issues to leadership. Attendance at your assigned worksite is an essential function of this position.
Candidates with a current CDL and required endorsements will earn an additional $1 per hour. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL and endorsements, after which they will also earn the additional $1 per hour. CDL training is provided onsite by certified INDOT staff.
