As a CDL Driver for Sperry Rail Service, you will operate specialized rail inspection vehicles and support critical testing operations across the Eastern or Western United States. This is a high-travel, field-based position where you will spend extended periods (3–4 months at a time) at various job sites.
You will be the backbone of our field operations, operating commercial hi-rail trucks and rail-bound detector cars on both roadways and railroad tracks. Your day will involve performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections, maintaining DOT compliance, and assisting with rail flaw detection testing and data collection. You will monitor onboard computer systems and perform ground-level rail inspections using handheld equipment. Beyond driving, you will play a key role in maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the vehicle and equipment, performing routine maintenance such as oil changes and filter replacements.
This role requires clear communication with crew members via radio and intercom, as well as maintaining professional relationships with railroad personnel. You will work in varied and sometimes extreme weather conditions, ensuring safety and compliance with all company policies and DOT/FRA regulations at every step.
Candidates must be prepared to pass a DOT physical, drug screen, and background check. Successful applicants will be expected to meet the physical and sensory requirements of the role, including the ability to distinguish colors, read monitors, and perform physically demanding tasks such as climbing steps and working in confined spaces.
Sperry Rail is an equal opportunity employer committed to building a diverse and inclusive workforce. We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and are dedicated to fostering a culture where honesty, accountability, passion, integrity, and teamwork thrive.
