The Health Unit Coordinator serves as the pivotal communication link for processing information and requests between patients, staff, visitors, physicians, and various hospital departments. This position provides essential clerical support to the clinical team, ensuring the smooth daily functioning of patient care from admission to discharge.
You will be responsible for managing the integrity of medical records, initiating data entry for patient-related functions, and maintaining all related forms and documents. Communication in this role is culturally based and age-specific, requiring a deep understanding of the unique developmental, physical, psychosocial, and cultural needs of the diverse patient population served.
Your day involves greeting visitors and patients, answering call lights promptly, and maintaining admit/discharge logs. You will act as a resource for locating supplies and medical records, facilitating communication with ancillary departments, and assisting physicians with Epic systems. From preparing requisitions for services to managing manual order entry during downtime, you ensure the unit operates efficiently.
You will also handle chart maintenance, ensuring forms and results are placed timely, and manage the physical environment by monitoring tube systems, maintaining office equipment, and ensuring the nurse's station is organized. Additionally, you will support unit governance and performance improvement activities, serving as a positive role model for the team.
Experienced coordinators may take on the role of HUC Trainer, providing onboarding for all new Health Unit Coordinator hires at The Christ Hospital.
