The mission of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) is to connect people, products, and places safely and efficiently. Guided by customer focus, accountability, and environmental sensitivity, the agency works to enhance the economy and vitality of North Carolina. NCDOT's work serves citizens locally while making an impact on the world through all modes of transportation.
This Engineering Technician III position is based in District 1, Cleveland County, reporting to the Assistant District Engineer. The role is integral to the division of highways, focusing on the practical application of civil engineering principles and highway maintenance methods. You will coordinate the review of technical plans and drawings for driveway permits, utility encroachments, subdivision design standards, and road addition packages.
The position requires a thorough understanding of NCDOT concepts, practices, and standards related to road and structure construction. You will apply engineering judgment to interpret plans, establish communication between technicians, engineers, and contractors, and perform highway stakeouts. The role involves conducting independent inspections of moderately complex projects with limited supervision, maintaining accurate records, and leading co-workers on assigned tasks.
This is an active, field-oriented role. You may be exposed to high traffic volumes, work at heights over water or traffic, and climb on bridge substructures and superstructures. The work often requires traversing rough and steep terrain, lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, and wearing safety toe shoes. The position demands flexibility, as you may be required to work nights and weekends for emergency and planned operations in all weather conditions.
Applications must be submitted by 11:59 PM on the day prior to the posted closing date. For questions or further assistance, please contact the recruiter, Jessica Lane Harkey, at DOT-WorkdayJobRecruitment@ncdot.gov.
