CASA’s mission is to create a more just society by building power and improving the quality of life in working-class Black, Latino/a/e, Afro-descendent, Indigenous, and Immigrant communities. Our vision is rooted in the collective power of our community, driving an inclusive, permanent, member-led movement that transforms communities and systems to ensure the needs, dreams, and aspirations of members are fully met as we strive for justice and full liberation.
CASA has a sister organization, CASA in Action, a separate but related nonprofit exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(4). While both organizations share the goal of supporting immigrants and low-income people in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, they operate with separate boards of directors. Employees, including this position, may split their time between the two organizations without affecting salary or benefits.
The Education Department supports CASA’s multi-generation approach by engaging youth and families in the attainment of educational opportunities for all. We partner with, initiate, and foster strong relationships between public school systems and immigrant families. The department oversees efforts to improve educational outcomes for immigrant students through coordinated interdepartmental work and supports expanding education policy initiatives in strategic partnership with the Department of Politics & Communications.
Mi Espacio is an afterschool program promoting high school graduation, leadership development, post-secondary enrollment, and career readiness for first and second-generation immigrant youth (grades 9–12). The program meets four days a week at High Pointe High School and CASA’s Multicultural Center. It includes workshops on college and career readiness, financial literacy, and health, alongside enrichment activities like sports, art, field trips, and community service.
The Life Skills ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) Program utilizes the teaching methodology of Popular Education to address the educational needs of adult learners. Lessons focus on concrete, practical everyday experiences, encouraging students to share and peer-teach based on their life experiences. Materials are geared toward student experiences to promote civic engagement, community empowerment, and the linguistic skills needed for long-lasting social change.
As an Education Intern, you will work directly with the Youth Programs Coordinator and ESOL Program Coordinators. Approximately 75% of your time will support the Mi Espacio Program, while 25% will support the ESOL Program during quarterly enrollment periods. You will help facilitate weekly workshops on career readiness, leadership, and grassroots organizing, utilizing popular education techniques to create a culturally responsive learning environment. Your role involves providing mentorship to support students' academic and professional success, maintaining consistent communication with program staff, and encouraging active participation in community events that promote civic engagement and social justice.
Interested candidates should email their cover letter and resume to Edwin Mejia, Community Education Manager, at emejia@wearecasa.org.
