The United Planning Organization (UPO) has served the residents of Washington, D.C. since 1962 as the designated Community Action Agency. Our vision is to create a city of thriving communities and self-sufficient residents, and our mission is to unite people with opportunities. We are dedicated to supporting vulnerable populations through comprehensive services and community engagement.
As a Driver/Outreach Worker within the Shelter Hotline Program, you will play a critical role in our Community Health Division. This position operates 365 days a year, providing essential transportation and outreach services to homeless adults and families in the District. You will drive UPO vehicles to transport clients to designated shelters and other approved locations, ensuring their safe arrival at these vital resources.
Beyond transportation, you will actively engage in street outreach, canvassing Washington, D.C. neighborhoods to identify at-risk individuals who need assistance. You will collaborate closely with the Community Response Team, DC Fire, Police, and other service providers to relocate clients from the streets to shelter. This role requires navigating the city during all weather conditions, often during nights, weekends, and holidays, while maintaining a sensitive and professional demeanor with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Your shift begins with a rigorous pre-trip vehicle inspection to ensure roadworthiness, including checks on fuel, water, tire pressure, and general vehicle condition. You will then coordinate with the hotline dispatcher via two-way radio to obtain resources for clients facing hazards due to inclement weather. Throughout your route, you will ensure all passengers are properly seated and safe, escorting them to overnight shelters or other approved destinations.
At the end of your shift, you will perform a post-trip inspection, ensuring the vehicle is cleaned, fueled, and secured for the next driver. You will also maintain detailed daily logs of all trips and complete necessary incident reports using electronic tablets. This role demands strong organizational skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team under pressure.
To be considered for this position, please submit your resume to the Career Center Online. All offers are contingent upon successfully completing a criminal background check, FBI fingerprinting, and pre-employment drug screening. As this is a safety-sensitive position, candidates must also be willing to submit to mandatory random drug and alcohol testing and yearly tuberculosis testing.
UPO is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where all individuals have the opportunity to succeed regardless of their background.
