The Driller serves as the central operator and supervisor on the drilling rig, responsible for monitoring well conditions and managing critical drilling parameters. This role is pivotal in ensuring the safe and effective operation of the rig's essential systems, including hoisting, well control, mud, and power systems. As the primary point of contact at the Driller's console, you will oversee the rig crew, delegating tasks to the Derrickhand, Motorhand, and Floorhands while maintaining constant communication with Customer representatives, the Directional Driller, and the Rig Manager.
You will stand or sit at the console for extended shifts, often up to 12 hours, making sound and quick decisions in a changing, hazardous environment. The role demands a high level of focus to operate equipment via touchscreens, joysticks, and levers while maintaining spatial awareness of moving objects and personnel. Beyond technical operation, you will provide leadership by instructing, training, and developing rig employees, ensuring strict compliance with safety procedures and maintaining the upkeep of the rig floor and Driller's cabin.
This position requires working outdoors for the entire tour shift in all weather conditions, ranging from high humidity and temperatures up to 100°F in southern states to cold, windy winters with temperatures as low as -40°F in northern regions. The environment includes heavy industrial settings with constantly moving overhead machinery, loud equipment, and potentially hazardous chemicals. You will frequently navigate steel grating, decking, boards, gravel, dirt, mud, ice, and snow, often requiring the ability to climb steep stairs and work at heights of 50 feet or greater.
Candidates must be willing to attend and successfully complete classroom training and testing to qualify for a rig assignment. The selection process includes meeting pre-employment testing requirements, which may involve drug and alcohol tests and background checks. Successful candidates will be expected to work on a rotational schedule (14 days on / 14 days off) with 12.5-hour shifts that may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays, as well as mandatory unscheduled hours with little or no advanced notice.
We are committed to providing a safe and inclusive work environment. All rig employees are expected to demonstrate clear communication skills, including the ability to read, write, and speak English, and to promptly follow verbal and written instructions. We consider qualified applicants regardless of background, focusing on their ability to meet the rigorous safety and operational standards required for this role.
