As a FedEx Freight Driver, you will serve as the vital link between our Service Centers and our customers. Your primary mission is to safely pick up and deliver freight while actively supporting our sales goals by identifying opportunities for additional business. This role is designed for individuals who take pride in operating heavy equipment and delivering exceptional customer service in a fast-paced logistics environment.
Your day begins with performing daily pre-trip and safety inspections on your tractor-trailer combination, which may include doubles, triples, or straight trucks depending on the route. You will be responsible for hooking and unhooking trailers and converter dollies, ensuring everything is secure before hitting the road.
Once on the road, you will navigate various road types and weather conditions to transport freight. At each stop, you will handle freight using motorized and manual equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks. A key part of your responsibility is securing cargo inside trailers using pallets, straps, and rope, and recouping or repairing any damaged freight when necessary. You will also manage required documentation, verify compliance with hazardous material regulations, and collect cash or checks for freight charges as needed.
Communication is central to your success. You will stay in constant contact with dispatch regarding delays, arrivals, and equipment issues. When interacting with customers, you will determine their specific pick-up or delivery needs and solicit additional business, providing leads to the sales team. Depending on operational needs, you may also perform duties typically associated with road drivers or dock employees, including chaining vehicle tires.
Candidates must possess a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with double/triple, hazardous materials, and tank endorsements. A one-year experience requirement within the last three years is necessary, or successful completion of the FedEx Freight Driver Development Course. Additionally, applicants must meet all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulatory requirements and maintain an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR). Note that the Hazardous Materials endorsement must be obtained within 120 days of offer acceptance.
