The Campsite Programs and Conservation Manager joins the hardworking and creative thinking team of the Trails Department, based out of Pinkham Notch in Gorham, NH. This role is a vital resource for campsite development and management for the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), dedicated to the dual principles of hands-on stewardship and user education in high-use backcountry areas.
This position serves as the primary manager for all campsite program operations at the AMC's White and Mahoosuc mountain sites. It is a role defined by a high degree of commitment to public service and landscape conservation. The manager oversees the Caretaker program, which includes recruiting, hiring, training, and supervising seasonal staff, as well as managing long-term planning for campsite infrastructure and the Group Use Outreach program.
Beyond daily operations, the manager acts as a key resource for sustainable campsite design and human waste management. This includes leading expansion efforts along the Connecticut River Paddler's Trail in Massachusetts and assisting with campsite development in other locations. Due to the strategic location of most campsites along the Appalachian Trail, the manager also serves as the Club's representative to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy's Regional Partnership Committee.
The role involves deep engagement with backcountry and wilderness recreation management issues across Northern New Hampshire, Western Maine, and the broader AMC region. The manager collaborates closely with the AMC policy team and regional coalitions to support conservation initiatives throughout Northern New England, ensuring that recreational use aligns with natural resource management planning.
To apply, please submit a resume, cover letter, a list of three professional references, and salary requirements. Please note that no phone calls will be accepted.
The AMC maintains a zero-tolerance policy for child abuse or placing children in danger. All employees working in programs or facilities serving children, disabled persons, or the elderly are required to undergo an annual criminal background record check, with employment contingent upon satisfactory results.
