The Autonomic Tech I serves as a vital support member within the Autonomic Medicine team, working directly under the direction of an Autonomic Medicine Specialist or Autonomic Neurologist. This role is dedicated to measuring the function of the autonomic nervous system through a specialized battery of tests. The position requires a unique blend of technical precision and patient advocacy, ensuring that physiological data—such as heart rate, blood pressure, and sweat response—is accurately captured while patients undergo specific stimuli like deep breathing or tilt-table tests.
In this role, you will be the primary point of contact for patients before and during their appointments. Your day involves preparing patients for testing, explaining each component of the procedure to alleviate anxiety, and ensuring they understand what to expect. You will manage the sterile preparation of testing supplies, including the drawing up of acetylcholine for sweat testing, and set up complex recording equipment such as EKG leads and blood pressure monitors. Throughout the testing process, you will monitor patients in real-time, troubleshoot equipment issues, and record observations directly into the EPIC system. A key aspect of the position is the ability to recognize immediate clinical needs and notify healthcare providers promptly to ensure patient safety.
The role serves a diverse patient population ranging from pediatrics (ages 1-12) to geriatrics (65+), requiring an understanding of growth and development principles across the lifespan. As the field of autonomic testing evolves, you will be expected to continuously learn and apply new testing methods and technologies to provide equitable, high-quality care.
Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to patient safety and clinical excellence. Successful applicants will be hired with the expectation of reaching Autonomic Tech II status within three years of their hire date. The role involves working in a fast-paced environment that may include periods of high stress, fluctuating workloads, and occasional travel to off-site locations.
