About the Agency
The Marion County Public Defender Agency provides essential legal representation to Marion County residents who cannot afford private counsel. As a public service, we handle matters involving liberty interests across felony, misdemeanor, Title IV D, civil commitment, and juvenile courts. Our scope includes termination of parental rights cases and appeals, alongside education and programs for alternative jail sentences. About the Role
This position serves as a dedicated advocate for indigent persons charged with Level 6 felonies or equivalent offenses, including cases in Juvenile, Problem Solving, and Appellate courts. TPR/CHINS Attorneys specifically represent parents in child in need of service cases. The role demands the regular exercise of independent judgment, particularly when policies are absent or when decisions involve complex legal and factual landscapes with significant impacts on agency policy. While guided by state and federal laws, the incumbent must demonstrate initiative, creativity, and the ability to make quick, informed decisions without the benefit of immediate consultation. Reporting to the Division Chief, you will navigate a dynamic legal landscape where independent action is the norm.
