The UC San Diego Institute of Engineering in Medicine (IEM), based in San Diego, California, operates within the research services industry to merge engineering principles with biomedical science. Established in 2008 through a partnership between the Jacobs School of Engineering and UC San Diego Health Sciences, the institute focuses on integrating novel technologies with clinical translation. Key technology areas include medical devices, imaging, systems biology, nanotechnology, biomaterials, tissue engineering, biophotonics, and vaccine engineering. One notable development is a subcutaneous microdevice designed for continuous glucose monitoring in diabetes that automatically adjusts insulin dosage.
The institute directs its research efforts toward the convergence of disease, technology, and sciences, applying an engineering approach to medicine. Priority disease areas include cancer, cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders, musculoskeletal conditions, and neurodegenerative diseases. By utilizing a team science approach, IEM establishes new frontiers in healthcare to advance precision medicine.
Collaboration is central to the institute's mission, with active partnerships involving industry stakeholders and clinical colleagues. The IEM works closely with the Clinical Translational and Research Institute (CTRI) to ensure innovative discoveries move effectively into clinical applications. This coordinated effort aims to transfer developed technologies into healthcare delivery systems to improve overall health and well-being.
