UPMC Magee Women's Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is seeking a PhD, MD, or DO Geneticist to serve as Assistant Director of the UPMC Clinical Genomics Laboratory (UCGL). This role offers a unique dual appointment, combining technical leadership within a high-volume clinical laboratory with a faculty position at the University of Pittsburgh.
The UCGL performs comprehensive prenatal, constitutional, and oncology molecular testing, utilizing advanced technologies such as next-generation sequencing (NGS) for whole exome sequencing, disease-specific panels, and pharmacogenomic analysis. The Assistant Director will play a pivotal role in the laboratory's mission by providing technical oversight, ensuring regulatory compliance, and driving service development in collaboration with UPMC Children's Hospital and other institutional partners.
In this role, you will bridge the gap between clinical operations and academic advancement. Your day will involve evaluating and reporting complex clinical genetics cases, ranging from carrier screening to quantitative RT-PCR and NGS data interpretation. You will work closely with the CLIA/CAP Lab Director to review and approve procedures and quality assurance plans, ensuring the laboratory maintains the highest standards of accuracy and safety.
Beyond the bench, you will serve as a key consultant to clinicians, guiding test selection and result interpretation. The position also includes significant educational responsibilities, where you will train laboratory staff, students, residents, and fellows while contributing to undergraduate and graduate teaching. You will actively participate in research aligned with UPMC's public health mission, collaborating with faculty to publish findings and present at professional conferences.
Candidates must hold an active ABMGG certification or be board-eligible in Laboratory Genetics and Genomics or Clinical Molecular Genetics. The selection process will focus on identifying individuals with a proven track record in operational leadership, expertise in genomic data analysis, and the ability to foster collaboration across a multidisciplinary academic and clinical environment.
