About the Role

The Assistant Captain plays a critical role in operating ships and water vessels across oceans, bays, lakes, rivers, and coastal waters. This position is essential for ensuring the safety and efficiency of our spill response and field service operations. You will conduct thorough inspections of vessels and peripheral equipment before each voyage, utilizing navigational equipment, weather forecasts, and tide/current predictions to safeguard the vessel and crew.

In this role, you will direct crew activities while deployed, providing clear direction to deckhands and passengers to ensure safety during navigational or event hazards. You will work closely with supervisors to adjust float and work plans according to developing environmental conditions. Your day-to-day responsibilities include deploying, towing, and anchoring containment boom and other spill response equipment, as well as conducting onboard safety drills and providing continuous training in safety, seamanship skills, and basic navigation techniques. You will also maintain all required vessel logs, inspections, and regulatory paperwork, ensuring compliance with EPA discharge logs, placards, and labeling requirements.

Hiring Process

Candidates for this position must possess the required certifications and licenses, including a USCG Merchant Mariner Credential and relevant endorsements. The selection process focuses on verifying technical expertise in oil response, maritime survival, and the ability to travel and deploy domestically and internationally. Successful candidates will demonstrate the ability to interpret complex technical procedures and manage work delivery expectations with customers.
