About the Examination

This examination is administered by the Human Resources Division (HRD) to establish an eligible list for filling vacancies within the Massachusetts Environmental Police (MEP) Agency. The MEP is dedicated to enforcing laws that protect the Commonwealth's natural resources, wetlands, and waterways, while ensuring public safety in outdoor recreational areas.

About the Role

Environmental Police Officers A/B serve as the primary law enforcement presence for the state's natural environment. Under general supervision, officers enforce general laws of the Commonwealth and federal statutes regarding natural resource protection, commercial and recreational outdoor activities, and hunting and boating regulations.

The role involves a dynamic mix of field operations and legal responsibilities. Officers conduct patrols, boardings, surveillance, and inspections of boats, off-road vehicles, and snowmobiles to ensure compliance with state and federal statutes. They investigate accidents and fatalities involving recreational vehicles, perform search and rescue operations, and issue citations. Additionally, officers appear in court on behalf of the government to follow up on enforcement actions and maintain a visible presence to educate the public on environmental safety.

Application Instructions

Candidates must apply through the Civil Service Online Account. If you already have an account, do not create a new one; utilize the Government Jobs Help & Support to access your existing profile. Applications are accepted from May 4, 2026, through July 7, 2026. A processing fee of $75 is required; applications are not considered complete until both the application submission and payment confirmation emails are received.

Candidates requiring a fee waiver due to receipt of public assistance or unemployment insurance must submit the Fee Waiver Form with supporting documentation by the application deadline. Current military personnel may request makeup opportunities, while other candidates may request a makeup exam only in cases of emergency or unanticipated hardship by filing a written request with verifiable documentation within seven calendar days of the exam date.

Hiring Process

The examination date is scheduled for August 15, 2026, at various sites across the Commonwealth. Candidates will receive a Notice to Appear approximately two weeks prior to the exam. The written examination measures skills and abilities such as independence, initiative, accountability, adaptability, and problem-solving.

Candidates claiming credit for prior employment or experience as an Environmental Police Officer A/B must submit original documentation with an appointing authority's signature by August 22, 2026. Veterans and disabled veterans may submit preference claims, and candidates seeking certification for bilingual or gender-specific vacancies must prove language fluency at the time of appointment.

Equal Opportunity

The Massachusetts Civil Service Unit encourages applications from women, minorities, veterans, and people with disabilities. Reasonable accommodations for documented impairments or medical conditions are available upon request via the Testing Accommodations Request Form, submitted at least four weeks prior to the examination date.
