This entry-level position within the Detention Officer series serves as the foundation for the Juvenile Justice Center's operations. Incumbents begin by performing routine duties under the close supervision of the Detention Supervisor, with the expectation of gradually assuming the full range of responsibilities with increasing independence.
The role is critical to maintaining the safety and order of the facility. Day-to-day responsibilities include conducting regular facility checks, performing cell and strip searches as necessary, and managing the intake process for youth entering the center. Officers are responsible for issuing clothing and hygiene supplies, processing paperwork, and releasing property. The position also involves transporting detainees to court, medical appointments, and other agencies, as well as serving meals and snacks.
A significant portion of the role focuses on direct interaction with youth and their families. Officers supervise visiting hours, approve visitors, and communicate center policies to parents. In emergency situations, staff must be prepared to restrain youth, perform first aid, and execute life-saving measures. Additionally, officers direct youth in housekeeping duties, including cleaning facilities and managing laundry.
