Under the general direction of the Water Plant Foreman and Chief Operator, this position provides competent operational oversight and management of the systems and equipment used in the daily production of potable water at a Class A Lake Michigan water intake and treatment plant. The role is designed to ensure the continuous, uninterrupted operational integrity of the City's water intake and drinking water treatment plant in adherence to AWWA Standards, Standard Operating Procedures, and USEPA/ILEPA regulations.
The incumbent operates semi-independently during assigned shifts, utilizing computer applications including SCADA to control pumps and valves. The work involves a blend of technical operation, maintenance, and general facility upkeep. Daily tasks include collecting water samples, performing chemical analysis (chlorine residual, pH, turbidity), and conducting inspection rounds to verify the security and mechanical integrity of motors, pumps, and filtration systems. When deficiencies are identified, the incumbent is expected to take immediate corrective action within their scope of authority or escalate to senior operators when necessary.
Beyond technical operations, the role includes general maintenance duties such as water tank cleaning, housekeeping, and assisting contractors. Employees may be assigned tasks of a similar or higher level classification to gain experience and training in preparation for advancement. The position requires regular interaction with City employees, elected officials, the public, and vendors, necessitating effective communication skills to explain water testing protocols and maintain professional decorum.
Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a Class C or D Illinois Water Operator's license within six months of hire. The selection process evaluates the applicant's ability to perform essential functions, including the physical requirements of the role and their knowledge of water treatment processes.
