Literacy Achieves is dedicated to empowering adults through education, literacy, and language access. We believe that every individual deserves the confidence and skills to thrive in everyday life, navigate work and school, and support their families. Our Adult English Language Learning Program is designed to help learners build the foundation they need to succeed in their community.
As a Volunteer Teacher, you will partner with adult learners to strengthen their English speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. This is a meaningful opportunity for individuals who want to give back, build community, and help adults gain the confidence to communicate effectively in daily life. Whether you are a college student, a working professional, a retiree, or a community member passionate about equity, your heart for people and willingness to learn are all that is required.
You will lead or support classes using curriculum provided by Literacy Achieves, creating a welcoming, respectful, and encouraging learning environment. Your role involves helping learners practice essential skills, follow lesson plans, and partner with co-teachers and staff to create engaging sessions. You will commit to teaching a minimum of two hours per week for the semester, bringing patience, flexibility, and creativity to support diverse learning styles.
You will not be doing this alone. Literacy Achieves provides comprehensive support to ensure your success, including:
Eligible volunteers may obtain course credit, internship hours, or community service hours with approval from their institution. This includes assistance with documentation and coordination with program directors.
Volunteer opportunities are available at our Vickery Meadow, ELM-East Dallas, and Wesley Rankin Community Center campuses, as well as online. Classes run on a semester basis:

Literacy Achieves, established in 1997 as the Vickery Meadow Learning Center, operates as a non-profit organization based in Dallas, Texas, dedicated to English literacy and life skills training. The organization serves non-English speaking adults and their young children, aiming to foster self-sufficiency and enhance community well-being. Starting with a focus on the ethnically diverse, low-income Vickery Meadow neighborhood, the entity has expanded its footprint to include campuses in West Dallas and East Dallas. Currently, the organization provides free educational services to approximately 1,200 adults and 330 young children each year.
The organization addresses common barriers such as transportation, childcare, and scheduling conflicts that often prevent non-native speakers from accessing education. Adult English Literacy Program classes are available during morning, afternoon, and evening shifts across seven proficiency levels, utilizing both classroom and computer instruction. A two-generation approach allows daytime classes to run concurrently with the Early Childhood Program. Evening sessions specifically accommodate adults who work during standard business hours.
The Early Childhood Education Program offers a literacy-rich environment for children aged four months to five years. Enrollment in this program requires a parent or caregiver to be simultaneously enrolled in the adult program, ensuring families learn together while children prepare for elementary school. All adult classes are taught by compassionate volunteers who provide support while building mutual respect within the learning community.
